DRS Training & Testing

I. DRS Training Protocol

The following materials should be used in training to rate the DRS:

  1. (Reccomended) DRS video training tape--a ten minute tape illustrating how to rate using the DRS (cost is $20; check made out to MSC-TBI Grant, for more information please email arshad.ali@hhs.sccgov.org). Alternatively, you can also download a PowerPoint show used as a DRS inservice (92K)
  2. Physical and History (admission, discharge and follow-up) for a sample subject and answer sheet for the three DRS ratings. (Physical and History (admission, discharge and follow-up) for a sample subject)
  3. Answer sheet and rationale for the sample subject.(Answer sheet and rationale for the sample subject)

If you are a trainer, and are using the materials offline:

  • arrange to have the videotape viewed by the appropriate identified disciplines/individuals who do ratings or review the PowerPoint inservice
  • copy and distribute the training materials to raters
  • notify raters of deadlines to return ratings and follow up if ratings not returned
  • distribute correct answers to raters after collecting all the completed ratings
  • identify and train new staff as needed

Remember, the answer sheet is distributed after ratings are completed. It is recommended that raters compare their ratings with the "correct" answers as soon as possible after completing the ratings, to maximize learning. Group discussion with other raters is optimum.

II. DRS Testing Protocol

Testing materials are similar in format to the training materials. Correct answers are not available to raters for testing materials, unlike training materials. If you decide you need testing in addition to training, please return the completed ratings to SCVMC for scoring. We will send you a report on performance. If needed, remedial materials will be provided (if the rater does not reach 80% accuracy). Testing materials are available online.

If you are a trainer, and are using the materials offline:

  • copy and distribute the testing materials to the appropriate identified disciplines/individuals who do ratings
  • copy completed ratings (or fax and keep original)
  • send/fax copies of completed ratings to:
